TeamBretMichaels.com #UnbrokenFriday Story!

Dear Bret,

I wanted to share my “Unbroken” story with you but first wanted to tell you that YOU are truly my Unbroken and my true inspiration in life! The monumental acts of kindness and your beautiful soul have inspired and helped so many and I am so very grateful to you beyond words!

Over the last four years I have been diagnosed with Reactive Hypoglycemia, Pre-diabetes, Functional Neurological Disorder which affected my ability to walk as well and Fibromyalgia which causes extreme daily pain and fatigue.

However, I don’t let these things break me and when I feel down, your music and your concerts and meeting you numerous times is enough to keep me going strong and tough.  Your music makes me feel invincible, free and just does the heart good!

It’s been amazing that I have been able to learn to walk again and I shared my story with you in Tunica last year and was so grateful to be back on my feet!

After all you have been through in your life I know that I can beat all odds as well!

So thankful to be able to attend as many of your concerts as possible through the years and will be seeing you soon as well!

I’m staying “Unbroken” all thanks to you!

Love you always and forever!

Shelley

Jen Gage, GiGi’s Playhouse Phoenix Founder Calls Bret Michaels A Class Act & Generous

“Bret is truly a class act! Generous, Accepting and KIND. Letting the kids join him onstage for the entire set and taking the time to meet and talk with each one of them was above and beyond anyone’s expectations. Bret is truly compassionate about helping others. I so appreciate how involved he was with our participants and families.  They were grinning from ear to ear and still are. Truly magical and the whole room felt it! He embodies GiGi’s mission to change outdated perceptions of Down syndrome, break down barriers to participation and foster inclusion for all. GiGi’s Phoenix is so grateful to Bret for his huge heart and loving spirit and amazing energy. In just 15 minutes Bret created memories that changed the attending children’s lives and created memories that will last forever for everyone who attended.”

Bret Michaels’ Life Rocks Foundation Collaborates With Team Carly Rocks Sending 15 Children To Diabetes Summer Camp

Bret Michaels’ Life Rocks Foundation Collaborates With Team Carly Rocks Sending 15 Children To Diabetes Summer Camp

On special occasions Bret Michaels’ Life Foundation collaborates with other charitable organizations to benefit individuals, families and causes. While backstage at a recent tour stop Mitch and Carly, a father and daughter diabetic pair met fellow diabetic Bret Michaels. Bret and Mitch discussed bringing their foundations together for this instance which resulted in funding to send 15 children to diabetes summer camp at Camp Ho Mita Koda located in Ohio.

As a lifelong Type 1 juvenile diabetic since the age of 6, Bret formed his Life Rocks Foundation out of necessity and a desire to give back to children and communities. In addition, Bret’s Life Rocks Foundation also works with organizations benefiting veterans, St. Jude Children’s Hospital and many others with instant impact and real results rather than taking a knee. Bret is about really doing something about it.

Each year Bret sends children to diabetes summer camp which focuses on learning how to manage diabetes while having fun and developing new friendships. Bret remains a focal point in helping to raise diabetes awareness. “Diabetes is the reason I fought so hard to win Celebrity Apprentice” said Michaels referencing his victory on the highest rated season of the show’s existence. “Collaborating Life Rocks with Team Carly Rocks to send 15 children to camp is an awesome day.”

In addition, Michaels works closely with the American Diabetes Association and JDRF having served as keynote speaker at numerous gala events which helped to raise millions of dollars for the cause.

Family Thanks Bret Michaels For Sending Their Son, Kyle To Diabetes Summer Camp.

Family Thanks Bret Michaels For Sending Their Son, Kyle To Diabetes Summer Camp.

My story of meeting Bret Michaels is a bit of an emotional one. I begin to write this with my son’s freshly autographed JDRF bandana next to my right hand, and a Kleenex next to my left hand because the last 24 hours have been unbelievable for our family!

On May 15th, 2015, our son, Kyle, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. It was the worst day of my entire life. My husband was working out of town and I was at home (eight months pregnant) with our three children. When our pediatrician came back in with the urinalysis results and told us he was arranging for us to be immediately transported to TC Thompson Children’s Hospital, I thought I was going to lose my son. Thankfully, we received wonderful care in the hospital and my son made a recovery from the horrible shape he was in at the time.

We began researching Type 1 Diabetes and learned that several celebrities live with this disease. One of course being….THE AMAZING BRET MICHAELS!! We kept telling Kyle, “Hey, look at this awesome rock star! He has Type 1 Diabetes like you do and he has done so many awesome things in his life!”

When I found out that Bret was coming to our hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee, I knew I had to at least try to see if I could arrange for Kyle to meet him. I figured it was a long shot at best and nothing would ever come of it. Much to my surprise, I received a response almost instantly that we could absolutely meet Bret! This news came on Kyle’s 9th birthday, so we announced to him at his birthday dinner that he was going to meet Bret Michaels. He didn’t believe us at first, which was okay because I was having a hard time believing it myself.

Last night…IT HAPPENED! Mark took our son up to meet Bret. Even though I was right behind Kyle, I couldn’t hear what Bret was telling him. When my husband and I joined in, Bret told us that he was sending Kyle to diabetes camp!! I guess we must have had a deer in the headlights look about us, because he had to repeat it! I don’t think you can put into words what we were feeling at this moment.

This was not just a meet and greet for our family…. It was truly a life changing moment! Bret’s kind words of encouragement to Kyle, as well as his generosity shows just how wonderful of a man he really is! I know we must have been monopolizing his time, but he never made us feel like he was rushing us out of there. He really took the time to talk with us about Type 1, answer our questions, as well as share some of his own personal struggles/triumphs that he has faced with this disease. More importantly, he made us feel like family. For the first time in three years, we finally felt like we weren’t alone in this fight!

We walked back to our seats, and I sat there for a few minutes before the show started just bawling my eyes out. Bret made my son feel like anything is possible and told him that this disease should not and WILL NOT EVER HOLD HIM BACK! Sure, Kyle hears that all the time from us, but when it comes from the ONE AND ONLY BRET MICHAELS…. YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT!

Thank you, Bret, for giving our little guy SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN!!

I have attached the picture from our meet and greet with Bret. Thank you for taking the time to read this! I know it was long and I apologize. My heart is so full today and we owe everything to Bret and his amazing team!! THANK YOU!! – Amy Pruett

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Bret Michaels Teams With A.J. Hawk To Help Sofia & Vincent

Update 6/8/17: We are happy to report Sofia’s cancer is in remission and she is doing great!

Update: We received these photos as a follow up to the story we did below just before the holidays where Bret Michaels’ Life Rocks Foundation and good friend A.J. Hawk’s Locks For Kids teamed up to help two awesome kids.
Just today one of the children, Sofia (aka Moo) received her wig. So happy for Moo and a huge thank you to Hawk’s Locks, our friends at Gemini Salon and Spa in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Kelly Ferro for the cut and style, and Leslie Thomas Zevnik at Wigs For Kids.

In the spirit of the holiday season, we’d like to share with you the following stories of hope, compassion in helping others and the off chance that two people can positively affect each other without even knowing it. Meet Sofia and Vincent, two children battling illness and circumstances beyond their control. Oddly enough, these children have never met each other nor have they ever spoken a word to the other, but their stories are linked together by way of two great friends in musician Bret Michaels and NFL linebacker A.J. Hawk through their respective charitable foundations.

Bret MichaelsLife Rocks Foundation recently met a spunky, outgoing 8 year old girl named Sofia who is battling lymphoblastic leukemia and because of intense treatments had lost all of her hair. Sofia’s fight with leukemia hasn’t been an easy one, but she remains strong receiving an outpouring of support from great family, friends, hospital staff and doctors. Even at 8 years old, Sofia has learned the meaning of paying forward certain gifts and toys she has received in an effort to brighten the day of another child going through the same thing she is. Sofia’s only wish, other than to beat leukemia, is to receive a wig.

Being that Bret and A.J. are great friends, Bret and his Life Rocks Foundation reached out to A.J. and his Hawk’s Locks For Kids foundation to see if they could help Sofia’s wish could come true. Without hesitation Hawk’s Locks For Kids went to work making this wish a reality and just recently Sofia had measurements taken for her new wig that she will receive in the coming weeks.

During the initial contact between Bret’s and A.J.’s foundations, Life Rocks met Vincent through Hawk’s Locks For Kids. Vincent is a vibrant, outgoing, awesome 13 year old boy who is living with Type 1 diabetes and autism. Bret, who is a Type 1 childhood diabetic himself, formed his Life Rocks Foundation out of necessity. One of the initiatives of Life Rocks is to cover the cost to send children living with diabetes to summer camp each year. In addition, Bret’s Life Rocks Foundation helps in teaching others how to manage their diabetes while raising awareness. With that being said Bret Michaels’ Life Rocks Foundation is sending Vincent to diabetes summer camp in 2016.

Huge thank you to A.J. Hawk’sHawk’s Locks For Kids” and Wigs For Kids on bringing their foundations together with Bret’s Life Rocks Foundation to get it done for these children.

We encourage you, if you have the means, to please consider making a donation to each of their great charities to continue helping great children like Sofia and Vincent. – Team Bret

Musician Suffers Serious Accident, Looks To Bret Michaels For Inspiration.

Musician Suffers Serious Accident, Looks To Bret Michaels For Inspiration.

My name is Michael Rose. I have a story of overcoming obstacles by being driven by the passion of music. In 1997 I had packed up everything I owned and moved from Huntsville, AL to Birmingham, AL to start my pursuit of my musical dreams. I was 23 and had began telling myself “if you don’t do it now, you will wonder what if all your life” so off I went. When I first moved I was working as a house painter and lined up work before I moved, but the paint work ended quickly and I was forced to take a job in a steel mill factory, a field of work I was not accustomed to. Fast forward 6 weeks and I am working on a metal sheer. It isn’t safe and next thing you know both of my hands are chopped off at the same time. I lost over half the blood in my body (had to have 5 pints of blood transfused), died for just about a minute. Eventually I woke up and have been fighting for my life ever since. So there I laid in this hospital bed, just lost my hands, I’m a guitar player and I just started living my dream that I had been longing for since I was 12 years old. In the blink of an eye it was all gone. The very first question I asked my surgeon was “Will I play guitar again?” he said “No”. It took me over a year, but I played again and have been playing ever since. I am a singer/guitar player/songwriter and am the brainchild behind my band Hook74 that I front write all the music for, record all of our music, film and edit all of our videos…all by myself without hands. I’m a husband, a father, musician AND a Rockstar! I never said “I can’t”, I never said “I quit” I never even asked “Why?” I just faced what was in front of me the best way I knew how. When I was 15 I used to carry a pic of Bret Michaels in my coat pocket as a reminder of what I wanted to be when I grew up, I think I’ve done a pretty good job of living up to it, the best I could!

Thank you Bret!

Michael

TeamMichaels.com Feature: Parent Thanks Bret For Inspiration For Daughter Living With Diabetes!

Dear Bret –

It’s been a year since my 20 year old daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. It changed her whole life when she was in college. She became very sick and very skinny. Then she found out she had to leave school and come home. She now has the pump. She also has a job and goes back to school in September.

I told her about you and how living with this disease never stopped you from following your dreams.

Thank you Bret, you are a hero to her! – Lori

TeamBretMichaels.com Story – Halle Thanks Bret For Sending Her To Diabetes Summer Camp

TeamBretMichaels.com Story – Halle Thanks Bret For Sending Her To Diabetes Summer Camp

Dear Bret Michaels,

As parents of an eight year old diabetic, Halle, we want to thank you for sending Halle to Diabetes Camp this upcoming summer. Halle is looking forward to camp but she is also a reserved gal and when we ask her questions about it, she is concise and matter-of-fact.

So, we asked Halle “why do you want to go to camp?” Halle’s blue eyes lit up and a big smile appeared. Halle replied, “it’s fun!” We prodded with “what’s fun?” and all she could say was “EVERYTHING!” Diabetes camp means SO much to our family. Why? First and foremost, as her parents, we know that the ADA sponsored camp has well-trained staff that know and understand how to care for Halle’s needs. As for Halle, when questioned what does diabetes camp mean to you? Halle stated, “I can focus on the fun.” At camp, Halle loses herself in the excitement yet feels supported by the staff and environment.

Halle has been a diabetic since preschool; moreover, diabetes is a journey that brings both successes and struggles. When Halle was asked to describe her diabetic struggles, she responded in a stern voice with “when EVERYONE gets to have cake and I have to wait because I’m like 257!” One of the blessings is sharing the same condition with her best friend Addison. They understand each other. Luckily, they are in the same school and had the opportunity to present a diabetic presentation to their entire third grade (on World Diabetes Day- November 14th). The girls wanted to bring more diabetic awareness to their school. When preparing for their presentation, the girls looked up Bret Michaels on the internet and felt inspired by his t-shirts that showed mathematically how many injections he has received in his lifetime. Halle and Addison made their own poster with their personal stats for the school presentation.

We are all grateful for Bret Michaels and The Life Rocks Foundation. Thank you for your advocacy of diabetic awareness. Thank you for supporting youth programing. Halle says, “thank you for letting me go to camp.” Yes, thank you Bret Michaels! Halle’s life rocks because of you!

Sincerely,
Brad and Tonya Kolenda
