TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Bret Michaels Teams With A.J. Hawk To Help Sofia & Vincent

Update 6/8/17: We are happy to report Sofia’s cancer is in remission and she is doing great!

Update: We received these photos as a follow up to the story we did below just before the holidays where Bret Michaels’ Life Rocks Foundation and good friend A.J. Hawk’s Locks For Kids teamed up to help two awesome kids.
Just today one of the children, Sofia (aka Moo) received her wig. So happy for Moo and a huge thank you to Hawk’s Locks, our friends at Gemini Salon and Spa in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Kelly Ferro for the cut and style, and Leslie Thomas Zevnik at Wigs For Kids.

In the spirit of the holiday season, we’d like to share with you the following stories of hope, compassion in helping others and the off chance that two people can positively affect each other without even knowing it. Meet Sofia and Vincent, two children battling illness and circumstances beyond their control. Oddly enough, these children have never met each other nor have they ever spoken a word to the other, but their stories are linked together by way of two great friends in musician Bret Michaels and NFL linebacker A.J. Hawk through their respective charitable foundations.

Bret MichaelsLife Rocks Foundation recently met a spunky, outgoing 8 year old girl named Sofia who is battling lymphoblastic leukemia and because of intense treatments had lost all of her hair. Sofia’s fight with leukemia hasn’t been an easy one, but she remains strong receiving an outpouring of support from great family, friends, hospital staff and doctors. Even at 8 years old, Sofia has learned the meaning of paying forward certain gifts and toys she has received in an effort to brighten the day of another child going through the same thing she is. Sofia’s only wish, other than to beat leukemia, is to receive a wig.

Being that Bret and A.J. are great friends, Bret and his Life Rocks Foundation reached out to A.J. and his Hawk’s Locks For Kids foundation to see if they could help Sofia’s wish could come true. Without hesitation Hawk’s Locks For Kids went to work making this wish a reality and just recently Sofia had measurements taken for her new wig that she will receive in the coming weeks.

During the initial contact between Bret’s and A.J.’s foundations, Life Rocks met Vincent through Hawk’s Locks For Kids. Vincent is a vibrant, outgoing, awesome 13 year old boy who is living with Type 1 diabetes and autism. Bret, who is a Type 1 childhood diabetic himself, formed his Life Rocks Foundation out of necessity. One of the initiatives of Life Rocks is to cover the cost to send children living with diabetes to summer camp each year. In addition, Bret’s Life Rocks Foundation helps in teaching others how to manage their diabetes while raising awareness. With that being said Bret Michaels’ Life Rocks Foundation is sending Vincent to diabetes summer camp in 2016.

Huge thank you to A.J. Hawk’sHawk’s Locks For Kids” and Wigs For Kids on bringing their foundations together with Bret’s Life Rocks Foundation to get it done for these children.

We encourage you, if you have the means, to please consider making a donation to each of their great charities to continue helping great children like Sofia and Vincent. – Team Bret

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Sisters Thank Bret For Inspiration To Fight Through Illness

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Sisters Thank Bret For Inspiration To Fight Through Illness

My sister and I met Bret Michaels August 21, 2011 at Grand Falls Casino in Larchwood, Iowa. It was the best night of our lives. I have been a fan since I was a teenager and can’t even count how many times I have seen him in concert. My younger sister has been a fan since she was a child. She was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at 9 years old. I was too nervous to even get a word out when I met Bret. My sister had a nice conversation about diabetes with him. He complimented her on how healthy she looked for her lifelong battle. He was the sweetest, kindest man we’ve ever met. In January 2014, I went into respiratory failure and was in a coma and on life support for 6 days. It took months to recover and I returned to normal functioning but I have now been diagnosed with COPD at the age of 43. In March 2016, my sister also went into respiratory failure and was in a coma and on life support for a week. Due to her diabetes and other illnesses, she is now walking with a walker and has not returned to her normal level of functioning. She has developed a terrible diabetic ulcer on her heel and is now fighting to save her leg at the age of 37. Type 1 diabetes sucks! We thank Bret for all the work he has done for juvenile diabetes and we thank him for giving us the best night and memory of our lives! We are strong women and will continue to fight the fights we’re given! – Tara

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: A Grandaughter Gives Grandfather The Gift Of Life

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: A Grandaughter Gives Grandfather The Gift Of Life

My father was diagnosed with Stage 4 renal failure. His kidneys were shutting down, only functioning at 30%. Without dialysis he wouldnt live past 6 months. I began the process of donating a kidneyDuring a visit to U of M for the final panel of tests and the doctors found a lump in my neck which I had never noticed. After having a biopsy done, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Two week later I was having my thyroid and 68 cancerous lymph nodes removed from neck. I was no longer eligible to donate my kidney. While trying to save my dad’s life, he saved mine, he was back at square one. This was back in 2013. I am happy, and very proud, to say that in January 2016 my very giving and loving 21 year old daughter Courtney donated her kidney to her grandfather. He has adjusted well to her kidney and no longer has to do dialysis. She gave him the best give anyone could ask for, the gift of life. – Tobie

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Bret Meets Local Tulsa, Oklahoma Diabetes Children

On a night in Tulsa, Oklahoma where Bret Michaels rocked an awesome, record breaking crowd he also met with local children living with diabetes. Michaels, who himself is a lifelong, type 1 diabetic since the age of 6, took time to talk to the children about the importance of good diet, exercise and managing their diabetes. Bret founded his own Life Rocks Foundation that sends children with diabetes to summer camp each year.

With Veterans Day approaching, I’m asking to share the attached photo of my 91 year old Dad.

Dad is a World War II Veteran, he was a Japanese prisoner of war, one of only 7 whom survived the camp. He’s now the last living. He’s not only a Veteran, but my Hero.

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: A Mother Channels Loss To Help Others

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: A Mother Channels Loss To Help Others

I wanted to share the story of losing my son to underage drinking when he was 16. After finding him in a field passed away I knew then that I would share this story and help in anyway I could to share the dangers of underage drinking. I now work with a local group parents empowered and share Braxton’s story in hopes that someone will be saved from our families tragic event.

I will forever share this and help anyone I can. If we all shared ourselves this world would be a amazing place. Bret you are an inspiration and I thank you for all you do.

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Inspired By Bret, Daughter Walks To Celebrate Mother’s Memory

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Inspired By Bret, Daughter Walks To Celebrate Mother’s Memory

On September 3, 2013 my life changed in a way I was not prepared for. My Mother, Mona who was completely healthy died unexpectedly from a massive ruptured brain aneurysm at the age of 59. She was the most beautiful person on the inside and out and lived her life with such a passion for life! Her motto was “Life is a Celebration!”

Since my Mother’s passing, I wanted to do something positive and make a difference in the world like she did. I came across the Brain Aneurysm Foundation website and saw that I could organize a walk in my Mom’s honor. I also came to find out that September is brain aneurysm awareness month which is the month she passed away. I along with my family decided that September would be the month that we would have our event.

We organized a 3 mile walk this past September 27, 2015 around beautiful lake Calhoun in Minneapolis, MN and for our first event it was a huge success! We raised over $5,000! The memory of my Mom will live on forever and now by our family having this walk to remember Mona, her love and laughter will be spread to all those who knew her by shining a little light on the fact that she’s gone, but never forgotten! And, she lives in our hearts forever!

Also, Mona loved music and loved to dance! We had an acoustic musician play at our walk and next year we plan to have even more music! Our family loves music, Bret Michaels and we truly believe music is therapy for the soul! Thankfully 2 months before my Mom passed away we were able to take her to a Bret Michaels concert! She absolutely loved it!!!

Our hope is by having our walk each year we will continue to spread awareness about the devastating disease of brain aneurysms and the signs and symptoms, and that brain aneurysms are hereditary. We are thankful that now each year in September instead of remembering that it is the month she passed away, we have a positive event to look forward to where we can see all friends, family and meet new friends along the way and celebrate the life of a woman who was larger than life!

Thank you for letting me share my story. Peace, love, rock ‘n roll! -Tanya

At last night’s Bret Michaels show in Wausau, WI, Team Saving Treyden was out in full force and left an inspiring, memorable presence. Upon learning of Treyden’s condition, The Life Rocks Foundation made it’s mission to help the Kurtzweil family during this difficult time. Treyden’s family and friends showed support by wearing orange shirts during the course of the night ending with Bret bringing Treyden’s parents Cassie and Travis onstage to honor Treyden’s memory.

On behalf of Bret and everyone at MEGI, Treyden will forever be with us. Treyden, Cassie, Travis and the Kurtzweil family will forever be apart of us.
