TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Hailey Returns From Diabetes Camp!

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Hailey Returns From Diabetes Camp!

Hard to believe a whole year has gone by! I wish I didn’t have to write this letter, because it means a cure hasn’t been found yet. Maybe this is the year! Big thank you to Bret Michaels who sent me to Camp Needlepoint last summer for the first time! It was awesome, and I am going back next summer to train to be a counselor. It was a life-changing experience, and I want to be a role model and friend to younger kids who suffer with this disease too. Those who know me know that I love hockey, and we are having a great season so far (#3 in State as of now)! Even with all of the challenges of having this disease and playing a sport, it’s worth it to me. The other night my blood sugar shot to over 600 during the game (kink in tubing, adrenaline rush, who knows). I had a very bad headache, nausea and my mouth was like cotton. My mom wanted me to sit out but I didn’t want to, so I continued to play. Later that night, I crashed down to 53, and my parents and I were up all night checking and re-checking my blood. When I’m low I have to eat/drink even though I don’t want to. I stayed home from school the next day feeling sick. When the same thing happened again two days later, my parents were on the phone with Medtronic and came to the conclusion that it was due to a “bad” batch of infusion sets. I almost had to go in for IV fluids, but thank goodness we were able to figure out the problem and I am feeling better now. The daily grind with this disease gets me down sometimes, but I will keep plugging away until a cure is found. I know I am blessed to have such a supportive group of family and friends – it means everything to me! If you want to walk with us on February 21st that would be awesome! If you are able to support JDRF in their efforts to find a cure, that would be great too! I have a feeling that 2015 is the Year For The Cure. Wouldn’t that be amazing?

xoxo Hailey

Dear Team Bret,

Hailey is home now from camp, and what an amazing, life-changing experience she had! When I went to pick her up on Saturday morning, she introduced me to so many new friends she had made, and they were all laughing and telling funny “camp stories”, singing songs (one about Bret Michaels, where everyone “goes to the pole” and sings Every Rose Has It’s Thorn – haha), making bracelets, etc… Nobody wanted to say goodbye! It was obvious that they had such a connection with each other that only they can have.

Sending Hailey to camp has changed her in so many ways. She loved it so much that she wants to go back next year (for two weeks) and learn to be a counselor! I think she would go back to camp this week if she could! haha

Words don’t express the gratitude that I have for Bret and his team. I have loved Bret since his days as frontman for Poison, seen him numerous times in concert (BMB), and watched him in Celebrity Apprentice, Rock of Love and Rock My RV. I have a special place in my heart for him because I know he has battled Type 1 Diabetes since age 6, and I have watched my daughter battle it since age 10. It is a life-long disease with serious implications, and a daily grind of injections and finger pokes. Bret has not let this disease bring him down, even though he has been through so much. Hailey sees this too, and it gives her hope and strength.

Bret, you are the real deal. My faith in humanity is restored when I think of you. Rock on, take care of yourself, and PLEASE, PLEASE come back to Minnesota ASAP!!!

Love,
The Herdine family
Julie, Greg, Emily, Jake and especially Hailey!

Last Night’s Bret Michaels Rock N’ Relief Concert, Through A Fan’s Eyes

Thank you for an amazing concert! You have done so much for the people of Pilger, NE and the surrounding towns. You donated a very nice amount of money last night and when you presented the check for the Pilger Senior Citizen Center, it brought tears to my eyes. I’ve been working in senior care for over 14 years and it meant so much to me that you did that. You continue to prove why you’re mine and so many others hero and idol!! Thanks again, Bret! See you on the road!

Love, Britt

Remaining true to his word on Sunday, August 24th musician, entrepreneur and philanthropist Bret Michaels returned to Norfolk, Nebraska to put on a SOLD OUT Rock N’ Relief benefit concert to aid individuals and families affected by recent tornadoes and storms.

Michaels, who on his day off recently traveled to Pilger, NE along with his band and crew, also assisted with cleanup efforts after the small mid-American town had been struck by tragic storms. Bret was excited to return to Nebraska joined by a community of friends that include Pilger Sheriff Mike Unger, area police, fire and volunteers with whom he worked side by side with in the trenches to help rebuild the town.

Having personal ties to Nebraska, with family living in the state and nearby affected areas, Michaels has asked lots of local friends, bands, residents, fire, police and volunteers to join him onstage where he made sizable monetary donations through his Life Rocks Foundation to benefit tornado relief efforts.

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Angela Bikes 100 Miles To Fight Diabetes

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Angela Bikes 100 Miles To Fight Diabetes

Diabetes has touched my life in many ways. My mom was diagnosed as a diabetic many years ago and has struggled each day to live a healthy life. She has good days and bad days, but will certainly not give up the fight. I decided to put together a fund raiser for the Bret Michaels Foundation “Life Rocks” In order to support this cause, I have decided to ride my bike 100 miles in one day from my hometown of Milford, CT. This event will occur on July 12, 2014. Bret will be visiting our town in August for the Milford Oyster Festival and I felt this was a great way for us to give back and show our support for this cause.

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Tristen’s Story

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Tristen’s Story

This is my little boy Tristen. He is 6 years old and has down syndrome. February 2013 Tristen was also diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Because of the diagnose of down syndrome he can not communicate when hes having high or low blood sugar. We constantly poke his little fingers to test him but he always has a smile. We are in the process of getting a diabetic alert dog, his story can be found on facebook “A Guardian for Tristen”. I wouldnt change anything about my little boy he has taught me so much and that God only gives us what we can handle. We need a cure NOW!

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Kenden Returns From Diabetes Camp, Gives Thanks To Bret

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Kenden Returns From Diabetes Camp, Gives Thanks To Bret

I would like to thank Bret and the Life Rocks Foundation for sending my son Kenden to Diabetes Camp. Kenden was DX with T1 diabetes 10/29/09. Kenden attends Camp FCYD UTADA in Utah . Every year he has really enjoyed going to camp and meeting other kids and looks forward to the next year when he can see them again. Camp has really helped Kenden to become more proactive and responsible in managing his diabetes. Kenden has already decided that next year he wants to be a camp counselor for the younger children that will attend camp and he will be responsible for helping them check their blood sugars , record there blood sugars ,and watching over them. Throughout the week of camp. It is amazing what a positive impact camp has had on Kenden and so many other children that attend and we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making it possible for Kenden and so many other children that fight diabetes to have a week where they can just be kids and every child there knows how it feels as you do everyday, and they don’t let it stop them. Thank you once again for your amazing giving soul.

Michelle & Kenden
