Bret –

We would like to thank you so much for sending Hunter to Camp Planet D. He had a blast and we are so grateful that he had the opportunity to experience such an amazing camp with people who live with the same disease he battles daily. He had a blast entertaining the camp with his back flips! He is ready to go back next year and is planning on becoming a counselor when he is too old to go.

Thanks so much.

Tanya (Hunter’s mom)

TeamBretMichaels.com Story – Halle Thanks Bret For Sending Her To Diabetes Summer Camp

TeamBretMichaels.com Story – Halle Thanks Bret For Sending Her To Diabetes Summer Camp

Dear Bret Michaels,

As parents of an eight year old diabetic, Halle, we want to thank you for sending Halle to Diabetes Camp this upcoming summer. Halle is looking forward to camp but she is also a reserved gal and when we ask her questions about it, she is concise and matter-of-fact.

So, we asked Halle “why do you want to go to camp?” Halle’s blue eyes lit up and a big smile appeared. Halle replied, “it’s fun!” We prodded with “what’s fun?” and all she could say was “EVERYTHING!” Diabetes camp means SO much to our family. Why? First and foremost, as her parents, we know that the ADA sponsored camp has well-trained staff that know and understand how to care for Halle’s needs. As for Halle, when questioned what does diabetes camp mean to you? Halle stated, “I can focus on the fun.” At camp, Halle loses herself in the excitement yet feels supported by the staff and environment.

Halle has been a diabetic since preschool; moreover, diabetes is a journey that brings both successes and struggles. When Halle was asked to describe her diabetic struggles, she responded in a stern voice with “when EVERYONE gets to have cake and I have to wait because I’m like 257!” One of the blessings is sharing the same condition with her best friend Addison. They understand each other. Luckily, they are in the same school and had the opportunity to present a diabetic presentation to their entire third grade (on World Diabetes Day- November 14th). The girls wanted to bring more diabetic awareness to their school. When preparing for their presentation, the girls looked up Bret Michaels on the internet and felt inspired by his t-shirts that showed mathematically how many injections he has received in his lifetime. Halle and Addison made their own poster with their personal stats for the school presentation.

We are all grateful for Bret Michaels and The Life Rocks Foundation. Thank you for your advocacy of diabetic awareness. Thank you for supporting youth programing. Halle says, “thank you for letting me go to camp.” Yes, thank you Bret Michaels! Halle’s life rocks because of you!

Sincerely,
Brad and Tonya Kolenda

TeamBretMichaels.com Feature: Anja’s Story Inspires Mattel/American Girl Dolls Diabetes Accessories

TeamBretMichaels.com Feature: Anja’s Story Inspires Mattel/American Girl Dolls Diabetes Accessories

Dear Bret,

Last year you featured my daughter Anja and her petition to get Mattel/American Girl to make diabetes accessories for their dolls.

Click here to read TeamBretMichaels.com’s first story on Anja

I wanted to update you on our progress and let you know that her petition was a success! Starting January 1st girls all over the world will be able to buy diabetic accessories for their dolls and stuffed animals. The diabetes care kit includes an insulin pump, meter, insulin pump, lancing device, glucose tablets, medical alert bracelet, ID card, insulin pump skin stickers, and carrying case. Mattel/American Girl gets bombarded with tons of requests every year asking them to make certain kinds of dolls and accessories. We are so excited that Mattel chose to make this product. This will make so many kids who struggle with this chronic disease and help them to not feel alone. The company began selling these kits in select stores this week and the response has been amazing!

Not only are type 1 diabetics buying these kits, but kids with a loved one suffering from diabetes and even boys who are using these kits on their stuffed animals. People are also donating these kits to diabetes clinics and hospitals to use as a teaching tool. We just wanted to thank everyone out there that shared our story, signed our petition, and wrote encouraging messages of support. So many people all over the world have already expressed interested in the buying diabetes care kits. Thank you Mattel/American Girl!

Sincerely,
Ingrid

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Hannah Returns From Diabetes Summer Camp

Bret Michaels and The Life Rocks Foundation sponsored Hannah this year to attend diabetes summer camp. She had an absolute awesome time. She got to meet Nascar driver Ryan Reed there and many new friends as well as got to see her friends from years past. As you can see she did the rock wall, giant swing, high rope course and archery. We can not thank Bret and the foundation enough for sending Hannah to camp this year.

Best wishes
Eric and Kristina Fletcher

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Sean & Fielder The Diabetes Super Dog

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Sean & Fielder The Diabetes Super Dog

My husband has had T1D since age 4. In 2010, my then 6 year old son was diagnosed with T1D while at Disney World. We have become a very active family in the fight for a cure and awareness of T1D. One year ago, we got a Diabetic Alert Dog. She has been an amazing tool in handling their diabetes. She can tell us that their sugars are dropping before the meters recognize it. Since getting her we have become active in the Diabetic Alert Dog community and helping to fundraise for other kids who are trying to get a DAD. Sean, my son, wrote a book called Fielder the Super Dog and the proceeds are used to help other kids get their DADs. We took it a step further and organized a virtual walk (Sniffing Out Sugar Run/Walk 2014) to raise funds for other kids. We love that Fielder helps us manage Sean’s diabetes well and gives him a lot more freedom to play all the sports he loves to do (baseball is his favorite). Before Fielder it was a constant worry during sports because his sugars drop so fast and then spike with glucose. Last week Sean was at an all day baseball tournament and never went below 100 or above 200 thanks to Fielder’s help. Check out our Facebook page called Fielder the Super Dog.

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Paige Rocks Diabetes Camp

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Paige Rocks Diabetes Camp

I thought you guys might like to read an update I just wrote on Paige. She is having an AWESOME time, absolutely LOVES camp and is learning to take care of herself. She has learned to paddleboard and also learned fishing! She even kicked the teenagers’ rears, coming in second place at archery. We are so proud of her. Paige dressed up as Professor Snape from Harry Potter and you can see her, all in black, in some of the line dancing pictures. She also made a new best friend, Katie.

Thanks again to Bret Michaels and the Life Rocks Foundation for sending Paige to camp!

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Lane Returns From Diabetes Summer Camp

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Lane Returns From Diabetes Summer Camp

Bret, Patrick, and The Life Rocks Foundation,

Lane has returned from his very first year at diabetes camp and it is all thanks to you. Lane really liked the swim party, fishing, and the rock wall. Most of all he can not stop talking about all the new friends that are just like him. With Lane being 8 years old and he was diagnosed at 5 years old he has often struggled with the I am the only one and I am not normal feelings. His visit to camp gave him that I am normal feeling as there was no one there that stopped to stare when he was checking blood sugars and doing site changes for his pump because everyone there was doing the same. Lane can not wait to go back next year to continue to build friendships with kids who are just like him. Lane’s most unfavorite thing at camp was he had to try new foods, he is a very picky eater and camp rules are you have to try 2 bites of the main meal before you could have a peanut butter jelly sandwich, which he would live off of he could. We are forever great full for your sponsorship in sending him to this camp.

Thank you again for all that you do for these kids,

Lane and family
