National Puppy Day – March 23, 2015

National Puppy Day – March 23, 2015

Today is National Puppy Day, a day to bring awareness about puppy mills and available, adoptable animals at shelters and rescues looking for their very own loving forever homes.

The MEGI family has seen many puppies come through our homes and families, living happily through their golden years.

Last year, we took in a stray dog in hopes of finding her owner or a new home of her very own. The weather was turning cold and we just couldn’t imagine her trying to find a warm place to sleep on a vacant property.

We named her Pinky Lee and much like many dogs on our road and in our family, she just showed up outside our gate and never left. The previous property owners and neighbors have all had to deal with animals being dumped on our road for many, many years.

The dogs we didn’t keep got taken to rescues and found their families. Pinky Lee should have been one of those dogs, but she came with nine puppies that entered the world just a month after we took her in.

Nine puppies, five girls and four boys that are now almost 6 months old. As we search for homes for these puppies, we want to remind you when you are looking for your furry forever family member, visit your local shelter or contact a local rescue. The most adorable little faces are there waiting for homes – even a few older ‘puppies’ that deserve a chance to be loved as well.

Here’s a few of the Pinky Lee Nine to help celebrate National Puppy Day and let’s hope that all the puppies, and older dogs, get their loving families sooner than later. ~ Christine

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Heidi Pet Rescues Skyla

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Heidi Pet Rescues Skyla

Anyone who has ever loved and lost a pet knows how difficult it is to let go. Last August I lost my Siamese kitty Versace. It broke my heart when she suddenly passed away. It took a few months, but I decided it was time to get a new kitty this year. I was open to adopting an adult cat, or kitten. I kept my search open for a few weeks, checking the various websites daily.

Then in March, I came across a certain cat that caught my eye. She was a Siamese, approximately 3 years old. So I left work, and took an extended lunch break to go meet her. She was at the AZ Humane Society. When they brought her into the little room I knew she would be going home with me. She seemed super sweet, but I could tell something was wrong with her. She’d take a few steps, and tip over! It was like she was tipsy. I discussed this with the H.S. and they said it could be something neurological, or an ear infection, or something. I took my chances, and adopted her. The AZ Humane Society gives a $500.00 voucher of credit to use at a Vet.

When I took her in, she had 2 ear infections. Then in a few days, she came down with a respiratory infection. She was barely eating, or drinking on her own. I burned through the $500.00 credit in no time. I was syringe feeding her food and water. She was so sick; I truly believe she wouldn’t have made it without me. But today she is good, she is a super sweet cat, named Skyla.

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Jodi Pet Rescues Special Cats

Our story starts off with 2 cats left for dead on side of road. We rescued them and got them back to health. Years past and we decided we had more to offer. I went back and saved her, took her home to get her all fixed up, her shots, but when we went to get her fixed we found out she was expecting babies. We kept them all and as I was going work I found a box that had a kitten in it on the road. I took him home and loved him. 2 months later we saved a stray cat someone was abusing. I saved his old body from anymore abuse. He lived with us for 4 years and died of old age. We spent happy years with him. I am a proud pet rescue mom and I encourage everyone to be too.

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Family Pet Rescues Brownie, Becomes Hero & Friend

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Family Pet Rescues Brownie, Becomes Hero & Friend

In April 2012 it was decided we would get a dog, my husband let me be in charge of this and we knew we wanted to adopt from an animal shelter. It had been a rough two years, our oldest daughter had been very sick and in and out of specialty hospitals. I knew it was time for our whole family to have a pet to help them heal from everything we had been through. The search began, and the first dog we wanted from our local humane society fell through, we were next in line on the waiting list. I read a news article a few days later about a huge puppy mill raid on the other side of our state, and the horrific things these poor dogs had been through. It felt right, so we hopped in the car and drove quite a ways to see the dogs from the raid. My daughter kept telling me we needed to see this dog, the poor thing was so scared and shaking. I was hesitant to say the least, my youngest two children are rambunctious to say the least. When we met him and spent time with him in the little room that was it, let’s just say he picked us. Our Brownie had lived in a small kennel with 40 other dogs for the first three years of his life. We took him home and loved him and reassured him, he was scared of everything, he didn’t know what grass was, he was afraid of the wind, for the first two weeks I had to sit a few feet away from him to get him to eat and he would look to me for reassurance. He has blossomed, he loves the snow and car rides, and snuggling on a lap. I often say he deserves to be spoiled because he had such a rough life. But most of all his bond with my daughter can never be overlooked, when she is not feeling well from her medical issues, he won’t leave her side, they are bonded for life. Truly he saved us, and has been a tremendous blessing for our whole family.

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Pet Adopt Helps Family Cope After Bout With Breast Cancer

TeamBretMichaels.com Story: Pet Adopt Helps Family Cope After Bout With Breast Cancer

My sweet angel mom passed away from breast cancer on May 10, 2013. She was 80 years young. We were devastated, sadness lingered our home. I thought maybe getting a dog would help with the healing process not only for us but my children as well. So I went to a local animal shelter and there she was, sitting as close as possible to the front gate as if to say pick me! She was so cute and sad at the same time. Snoopy we call her is a Beagle-Hound mix she was 6 months old and in a cage all by herself. I knew that she was meant for us. Since then she is a big part of our family and we love her very much.

TeamBretMichaels.com Pet Rescue Story: Bonnie Adopts Ralphie!

TeamBretMichaels.com Pet Rescue Story: Bonnie Adopts Ralphie!

My son is doing an internship at a place called Animal House, which is where dogs and cats are sent from the pound so that they are not put to sleep. Anyways, my son was telling me stories about the dogs and I decided I wanted to go take a look. My other dog Tiberius seemed depressed after Dargo left, which was my son’s ex-girlfriends’ dog. My mom and I went down to Animal House to look at the dogs and as we walked through looking at the dogs which were all so precious we came upon a pen where there were several puppies and before I knew it there was this pup named Ralphie who started waving his paws, “like take me please”. I immediately said, “this is the one” and my son smiled. We got to take the dog to the family pen where we got to spend time with him. I wondered about Tiberius and was worried if he would be ok with this pup so I went back home picked Tiberius up and went back to the Animal House and they brought Ralphie out to the pen where we spent time together. Next thing I knew I was putting the $25 down to adopt the pet and they told me to return on Sunday with the rest of the money after Ralphie got fixed and got a chip put in. Needless to say we are now the proud owners of this cute little Chorgy named Ralphie. He is my Christmas to all my family but really my dog.. LOL! He loves sleeping right next to me. By the way he is sporting a Bret Michaels collar from the Pets Rock collection at Petsmart.
