Mother Of Son With Type 1 Diabetes Thanks Bret For Compassion

This is Kimberly Gerrish. I had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet Bret after his amazing show in Thunder Bay this past weekend. I just have to say, that Bret was so compassionate, patient and willing to listen, it was nice to talk with a celebrity that was so caring!

It meant a lot to me to meet Bret, as I shared with him that my 22 year old son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was 2 years old. Its been a challenging illness to saw the least, but the last couple of months have been particularly challenging for Taylor and myself. Two months ago I found my son in insulin shock, minutes away from death after a seizure. He had been drinking the night before, came home and passed out. My son is on the pump which can mean that he can get into danger a lot quicker. Thank goodness I was home and was able to call 911. Taylor had plans to go to Indonesia to volunteer and teach english to children this year, but he has made it his goal to take care of his health first. I shared this traumatic experience with Bret and he was so reassuring. He was candid about how challenging his 20s were.

He took the time to make an encouraging video for my son which I shared with him. This meant a lot to him hearing the words from someone who knows exactly what life is with diabetes.

My son dedicated many of his younger years as a child ambassador for JDRF. He went into school and service clubs to educate others about the illness. Bret’s work for JDRF puts a face to this chronic illness. I was so touched to hear that that he made a donation to JDRF during his visit in Thunder Bay. I have been impressed with how much energy and time my son has given to getting his diabetes under control over the last year. His blood results have been spectacular.

People like Bret and Taylor are truly an inspiration. I love that Bret discussed his diabetes at most of his appearances. In our house it has always been our motto that diabetes can never be used an excuse. I know my son will make his mark in the world as well.

Please, please thank Bret again and give him a big hug for me.

We will cherish his words and special video for Taylor forever xo
