Family Thanks Bret Michaels For Sending Their Son, Kyle To Diabetes Summer Camp.

My story of meeting Bret Michaels is a bit of an emotional one. I begin to write this with my son’s freshly autographed JDRF bandana next to my right hand, and a Kleenex next to my left hand because the last 24 hours have been unbelievable for our family!

On May 15th, 2015, our son, Kyle, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. It was the worst day of my entire life. My husband was working out of town and I was at home (eight months pregnant) with our three children. When our pediatrician came back in with the urinalysis results and told us he was arranging for us to be immediately transported to TC Thompson Children’s Hospital, I thought I was going to lose my son. Thankfully, we received wonderful care in the hospital and my son made a recovery from the horrible shape he was in at the time.

We began researching Type 1 Diabetes and learned that several celebrities live with this disease. One of course being….THE AMAZING BRET MICHAELS!! We kept telling Kyle, “Hey, look at this awesome rock star! He has Type 1 Diabetes like you do and he has done so many awesome things in his life!”

When I found out that Bret was coming to our hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee, I knew I had to at least try to see if I could arrange for Kyle to meet him. I figured it was a long shot at best and nothing would ever come of it. Much to my surprise, I received a response almost instantly that we could absolutely meet Bret! This news came on Kyle’s 9th birthday, so we announced to him at his birthday dinner that he was going to meet Bret Michaels. He didn’t believe us at first, which was okay because I was having a hard time believing it myself.

Last night…IT HAPPENED! Mark took our son up to meet Bret. Even though I was right behind Kyle, I couldn’t hear what Bret was telling him. When my husband and I joined in, Bret told us that he was sending Kyle to diabetes camp!! I guess we must have had a deer in the headlights look about us, because he had to repeat it! I don’t think you can put into words what we were feeling at this moment.

This was not just a meet and greet for our family…. It was truly a life changing moment! Bret’s kind words of encouragement to Kyle, as well as his generosity shows just how wonderful of a man he really is! I know we must have been monopolizing his time, but he never made us feel like he was rushing us out of there. He really took the time to talk with us about Type 1, answer our questions, as well as share some of his own personal struggles/triumphs that he has faced with this disease. More importantly, he made us feel like family. For the first time in three years, we finally felt like we weren’t alone in this fight!

We walked back to our seats, and I sat there for a few minutes before the show started just bawling my eyes out. Bret made my son feel like anything is possible and told him that this disease should not and WILL NOT EVER HOLD HIM BACK! Sure, Kyle hears that all the time from us, but when it comes from the ONE AND ONLY BRET MICHAELS…. YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT!

Thank you, Bret, for giving our little guy SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN!!

I have attached the picture from our meet and greet with Bret. Thank you for taking the time to read this! I know it was long and I apologize. My heart is so full today and we owe everything to Bret and his amazing team!! THANK YOU!! – Amy Pruett
